Sulukule is a Romani or Gypsy neighborhood in Turkey. The Sulukule Travelers are a Tribal Middle Eastern Dance troupe based in Charleston, WV. Our influences stem from North Africa, India, the Near and Middle East, and Central Asia. We use standard choreography for dramatic use of space and numbers, as well as improvisational choreography for spontaneous creativity. Current members are also involved in the Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval and Renaissance re-creation organization. As a result, historical elements often come into play during our performances. Our costuming ranges from historical to modern fusion. Soon, we will be adding musicians to our ensemble, and are looking forward to working with this exciting element.
